PayLater

PayLater for Shopify

Let your shoppers split any order into four interest-free payments.

This page is for Shopify merchants. It walks you through connecting your store to PayLater, what your shoppers will see, and what to do when something does not look right.

How it works for your shoppers

PayLater appears at checkout as a payment method. Your shopper places the order as usual and completes their PayLater plan straight after.

  1. Choose PayLater

At checkout, the shopper selects PayLater as their payment method and places the order.

  2. Get the payment link

PayLater emails the shopper a secure link to complete their Split in 4 plan.

  3. Complete the plan

The shopper signs in to PayLater and confirms their plan before the payment window ends.

  4. Order marked paid

The order is marked paid in your Shopify admin, ready for you to fulfil.

Setup guide

Steps marked You are done in your Shopify admin. Steps marked PayLater are handled by our team.

  1. You

    Become a PayLater merchant

Sign your merchant agreement with PayLater. Your onboarding contact will confirm your PayLater merchant ID and outlet ID, and tell you how to share your store details securely.

  2. You

Create a Shopify app for PayLater

PayLater needs limited access to your orders so it can mark them paid or cancel them. In the Shopify Dev Dashboard, create an app for your store and install it with these permissions (access scopes):

    • read_orders and write_orders
    • read_fulfillments and write_fulfillments

Then share the app's client ID and client secret (the secret starts with shpss_) with your onboarding contact, through the secure channel they give you.

Keep secrets out of email and chat. Never post your client secret in a group chat, a support ticket or a plain email. If it is ever exposed, rotate it in Shopify and let us know.
Older stores: if your store already uses a custom app created directly in the Shopify admin, our team may ask for an Admin API access token (starting shpat_) instead. We will tell you if this applies.
  3. You

Add PayLater as a payment method

    In your Shopify admin:

    1. Go to Settings then Payments.
    2. Under Manual payment methods, choose Create custom payment method.
    3. Name it PayLater. You can add more, for example PayLater - Split in 4.
    4. In the additional details, tell shoppers what happens next, for example: "Split your order into 4 interest-free payments. After placing your order you will receive an email with a link to complete your PayLater plan."
    5. Save.
The name must include "PayLater" as one word. This is how we recognise PayLater orders. A name such as "Pay Later" or "Buy now, pay later" will not be picked up, and those shoppers will not receive a payment link.
  4. PayLater

    We connect your store

Our team checks your Shopify and PayLater credentials, then connects your store. As part of this we subscribe your store to the order notifications we need, so you do not have to set these up yourself. We will also agree your payment window with you (see below).

  5. You

    Place a test order

Place a small order on your store and choose PayLater at checkout. Check that:

    • the order appears in your Shopify admin as payment pending;
    • the email address on the order receives the PayLater payment link;
    • once the plan is completed, the order shows as paid.

If any of these do not happen, contact support with your store's .myshopify.com address and the Shopify order number.

The payment window

Each order has a time limit for the shopper to complete their PayLater plan. The window is agreed with you at onboarding and applies to orders placed after any change.

12 hours

The standard window. It gives the shopper time to finish their plan, even if they step away from checkout.

Reminder

If the plan is not complete partway through the window, we send the shopper a reminder email with their link.

Auto-cancel

If the order is still unpaid when the window ends, we cancel it in Shopify and email the shopper. Orders already paid are never cancelled.

Fulfil only paid orders. Wait until Shopify shows an order as paid before you ship it. To change your window or turn auto-cancel off, contact support.

Go-live checklist

Before you announce PayLater to your shoppers, make sure each of these is true.

  • Merchant agreement signed with PayLater
  • Shopify app installed with the four access scopes
  • Client ID and secret shared securely
  • Custom payment method named with "PayLater"
  • PayLater has confirmed your store is connected
  • Test order completed and marked paid
  • Your team knows to fulfil only paid orders
  • Payment window agreed

Common questions

Quick answers to what merchants ask us most.

A shopper chose PayLater but did not receive a payment link

Ask the shopper to check their spam or junk folder, and make sure the order has the right email address. Then check the payment method name in Shopify includes "PayLater" as one word. If both are fine, contact support with the order number.

A shopper says they paid, but the order is not marked paid

It can take a few minutes for the order to update. If it is still pending after 15 minutes, or it was cancelled, do not refund or cancel anything yourself. Contact support with the order number and we will check the payment.

An order was cancelled automatically

The shopper did not complete their plan within your payment window, so the order was cancelled and the shopper was told by email. They are welcome to place a new order.

Can I change the payment window?

Yes. Contact support with the window you want. The change applies to orders placed after it is made; orders already waiting keep their original window.

I renamed my store or changed my domain

Let us know before or straight after. We identify your store by its .myshopify.com address, so a change can stop orders from reaching us. Your custom domain (for example www.yourstore.com) does not affect this.

I rotated my Shopify app secret or reinstalled the app

Send us the new client secret through your secure channel. Until we update it, PayLater cannot mark orders paid or cancel them on your store.

Does PayLater charge my shoppers interest or late fees?

No. PayLater is Sharia-compliant: shoppers pay the order amount in four instalments with no interest.

Need a hand?

Our merchant support team can help with setup, test orders and anything that does not look right. Include your .myshopify.com address and the order number, but never your passwords or secrets.
